Historical Information

The Derwas Court Apartment Building was built from 1913-1914, and was planned to meet the demand for apartments in Edmonton’s pre-World War I boom economy. It was built for and owned by Mr. E. D. Baugh, but he lost ownership of the building in 1923 due to occupants being unable to pay rent during the war.

The Edmonton architect that designed the Derwas was Edward Collis Hopkins. It is a rectangular plan with a red brick facade. The main facade is divided into five bays by brick pilasters and contrasting window sills, with keystone treatments above each window. A set of double doors with a fanlight above marks the entrance vestibule, set below an arch distinguished by a contrasting keystone and voussoirs.

On each of the three storeys are four suites, each with a fireplace in the living room, a formal dining room, a balcony, and a single bedroom. The rather small kitchens and bathrooms are illuminated by light shafts. The Derwas Court Apartment Building is on the City of Edmonton’s Inventory of Historic Resources, meaning that it is eligible to be designated as a Municipal Historic Resource.
